Reform the legal aid means test for Domestic Abuse survivors
Ben Maguire MP is calling on the government to take urgent action by reforming the legal aid means test for thousands of domestic abuse victims. It is unacceptable and unjust that vulnerable survivors are unable to access justice.
Currently, victims who earn just above a certain income threshold (in the ‘legal aid means test’) will not be given financial support for their legal costs.
Many of North Cornwall constituents simply cannot afford to pay these astronomical fees, especially in cases of economic abuse. These are people who are just trying to protect themselves, and often their young children from their abusers.
Therefore, The income threshold MUST be raised. The government must act on its promises to reduce violence against women and girls, removing any barriers that exclude vulnerable victims from their right to justice.
