Cllr Rosie Moore secures unanimous support for seal motion

Cllr Rosie Moore has secured unanimous cross party and Independent support for her first full council motion, calling for a voluntary ban on plastic flying rings to protect the county's seals.

Her motion supported by fellow Lib Dem Councillor for Lanivet, Blisland & Bodmin St Lawrence Chris Batters, will reduce the use of ring frisbees which cause serious harm to marine life and has been supported by the UK Seal Alliance, Cornish Seal Sanctuary and British Divers Marine Life Rescue with over 42,000 people supporting their campaign.

Moore said she was "absolutely delighted" with the decision, which would protect marine wildlife from "horrendous" injuries. Following similar success in Swansea and support from retailers such as Tesco and Sainsbury's, this voluntary ban has seen positive uptake from shopkeepers and beachgoers.

The next steps include Cornwall Council launching a communications programme and working with local businesses to ask them to discontinue offering the products, as well as putting posters on beaches to educate tourists.

Cllr Moore hopes that this change and the cross party support it's received not only sees a positive change for marine wildlife in Cornwall but will also put pressure on the government to introduce nationwide measures.
